At VeloElite, every bike that comes through our workshop is treated as an individual. A well-used winter commuter requires a different approach to a race-ready road bike, while a family mountain bike has very different servicing requirements to a high-performance gravel bike.

Although we offer different levels of servicing to suit different bikes and budgets, every service starts with the same objective: ensuring your bike is safe, reliable and performing exactly as it should.

It All Starts With an Inspection

Before reaching for a single tool, we begin with a thorough visual inspection of the bike.

We’ll often ask if you’ve noticed anything unusual while riding. Perhaps the gears have become hesitant, the brakes don’t feel as sharp as they once did, or you’ve developed an annoying creak that only appears under load. Even small pieces of information can help us identify issues more quickly.

We’ll then assess the overall condition of the bike, checking for obvious wear, crash damage, loose components or anything that may require immediate attention before servicing begins.

Choosing the Right Service Level

Not every bike needs a complete strip-down, which is why we offer three different service levels.

Our Basic Service is ideal for bikes that are generally in good condition but would benefit from a professional safety inspection and adjustment. It includes brake and gear adjustments, bolt checks and an overall inspection to ensure everything is operating correctly.

Our Premium Service goes a step further, including a full drivetrain degrease and clean before everything is correctly lubricated and adjusted. This is our most popular option for regular riders.

For bikes that have covered significant mileage or simply deserve the most comprehensive attention, our Ultimate Service also includes servicing of the headset, bottom bracket and hub bearings, helping restore smooth performance throughout the bike.

The Drivetrain Gets Special Attention

Your drivetrain is one of the hardest-working parts of the bike, so it receives particularly close attention during servicing.

We measure chain wear using specialist tools rather than simply judging it by eye. Replacing a worn chain at the correct time can often prevent unnecessary wear to the cassette and chainrings, potentially saving considerably more expensive repairs later.

Depending on the service level, the drivetrain may also be fully degreased before being cleaned, lubricated and adjusted. We also inspect derailleur alignment, gear cables and indexing to ensure shifting remains smooth and accurate.

Checking the Braking System

Brakes are one of the most important safety systems on any bike, so we inspect them carefully regardless of the service level.

Brake pads are checked for wear, while disc brake rotors or wheel braking surfaces are inspected for damage or excessive wear. We also assess brake cables or hydraulic systems to ensure they’re operating correctly.

Small adjustments often make a noticeable difference to braking performance, while identifying worn components early can help avoid more expensive repairs later.

Wheels, Tyres and Bearings

Even if a bike appears to ride perfectly well, small issues can develop gradually over time.

We inspect the wheels for trueness, check spoke tension, assess hub bearings and look for signs of excessive wear or play. Tyres are examined for cuts, embedded debris and uneven wear, while tyre pressures are adjusted to suit the rider and intended use.

These checks not only improve performance but also help reduce the likelihood of unexpected mechanical problems during future rides.

The Details Matter

Professional servicing isn’t simply about fixing obvious faults.

Throughout the service we’ll also check items such as headset adjustment, crank security, pedal condition, saddle security and the torque of critical bolts. Modern bicycles often combine lightweight materials with precise manufacturing tolerances, making correct assembly just as important as replacing worn parts.

Attention to these smaller details is often what separates a bike that simply works from one that feels genuinely enjoyable to ride.

Final Adjustments and Quality Checks

Before any bike leaves our workshop, we carry out a final series of checks to ensure everything is operating as expected.

Gears are fine-tuned, braking performance is verified and all adjustments are rechecked. Where appropriate, we’ll also carry out a test ride to confirm the bike performs properly under real riding conditions.

If we’ve identified additional wear during the service, we’ll explain exactly what we’ve found and discuss the available options before carrying out any extra work.
