5 Fantastic Café Rides in Northamptonshire for Summer Cycling
One of the best things about cycling in Northamptonshire is that you never have to ride far before finding quiet country lanes, picturesque villages and, of course, somewhere excellent to stop for coffee and cake.
Whether you’re heading out for a relaxed Sunday morning spin or putting in a longer endurance ride, a good café stop often becomes the highlight of the day. Fortunately, Northamptonshire has plenty of fantastic options, many of them connected by some of the county’s most enjoyable roads.
Here are five of our favourite café rides to enjoy this summer.
1. Ringstead & The Watermill Tearoom
Distance: 20–35 miles
Suitable for: Road bikes, hybrids and e-bikes
A ride through Ringstead, Great Addington, Woodford and the surrounding villages offers everything many cyclists love about Northamptonshire—rolling countryside, relatively quiet lanes and beautiful riverside scenery.
The reward is The Watermill Tearoom, a charming café set beside the River Nene. It’s an ideal place to enjoy coffee and homemade cake before heading back out onto the bike.
The roads around this area are generally well surfaced, although it’s worth keeping an eye out for loose gravel on some of the narrower lanes after heavy rain.
Workshop Notes
Country lanes often collect small flints and hedge cuttings during the summer months. Before heading home, take a minute to check your tyres for embedded debris—it can prevent an inconvenient puncture later.
2. Holly Lodge Farm Café
Distance: 25–45 miles
Suitable for: Road, gravel and leisure riders
Holly Lodge Farm has become an increasingly popular destination for cyclists, and it’s easy to see why. The café is welcoming, there’s plenty of outdoor seating and it’s perfectly positioned amongst some superb Northamptonshire roads.
You can approach from Wellingborough, Oundle, Thrapston or Raunds, making it an excellent meeting point for group rides.
If you enjoy exploring, there are numerous quiet roads nearby that allow you to extend the ride without encountering too much traffic.
Workshop Notes
Long summer rides generate plenty of heat, particularly on disc brakes. If you’ve noticed braking performance starting to fade or hear unusual noises, it’s worth having your pads checked before they become excessively worn.
3. Oundle Circular
Distance: 30–50 miles
Suitable for: Road bikes
Few market towns are as popular with local cyclists as Oundle. The surrounding roads towards Aldwincle, Tansor, Nassington and Fotheringhay provide a wonderful mixture of gentle climbs, flowing descents and beautiful countryside.
Oundle itself offers plenty of independent cafés, making it an easy destination for riders looking to combine great roads with somewhere to refuel.
Early mornings are particularly enjoyable before the roads become busier later in the day.
Workshop Notes
The rural roads around Oundle are fantastic to ride but can become muddy after harvesting or heavy rainfall. Giving your drivetrain a quick clean afterwards helps prolong the life of chains and cassettes.
4. Pitsford Reservoir Loop
Distance: 25–40 miles
Suitable for: Road bikes and hybrids
Pitsford Reservoir has been a favourite cycling destination for many years, and with good reason. The surrounding roads provide rolling terrain without any particularly brutal climbs, making the route enjoyable for riders of all abilities.
The café provides an excellent opportunity to stop, enjoy the views and refuel before completing the loop.
This is also one of the area’s better routes if you’re introducing somebody to longer rides.
Workshop Notes
Before any longer ride, check your tyre pressures. Correct pressures improve comfort, grip and rolling efficiency while also reducing the risk of pinch punctures.
5. Stanwick Lakes & Nene Valley
Distance: 20–35 miles
Suitable for: Road bikes, hybrids and families
The roads around Stanwick Lakes, Higham Ferrers and the wider Nene Valley offer relaxed riding through attractive countryside, with plenty of opportunities to extend or shorten the route depending on how you’re feeling.
It’s an excellent option for steady weekend rides, particularly if you’re riding with friends or introducing newer cyclists to longer distances.
The flatter terrain also makes it ideal for recovery rides after a tougher weekend on the bike.
Workshop Notes
If your bike has been standing in the garage since last summer, it’s worth checking the chain for surface corrosion, ensuring both tyres are correctly inflated and confirming the brakes operate smoothly before setting off.
Enjoy the Ride… and Look After Your Bike
One of the joys of cycling in Northamptonshire is that there’s always another quiet lane to explore or another café to discover. Looking after your bike means you can simply enjoy the ride rather than worrying about unexpected mechanical problems.
Whether your bike needs a quick adjustment, a routine service or a more comprehensive inspection before a busy summer of riding, our workshop in Hardwick is always happy to help.
You can find out more about our servicing options on our Bike Servicing & Repairs page.
From the Workshop
Summer is our busiest time of year, and one of the most common things we see is perfectly good bikes that simply haven’t been ridden for several months. A quick pre-season service is often all that’s needed to restore smooth shifting, confident braking and reliable performance for the rest of the cycling season.
